The title may seem to mislead. It’s not about Nokia Phones. It’s just a cool little short about creative community art helping our oceans. I thought it was very interesting.

Disturbing Images after Haiti Earthquake

Laurel LaFlamme says:

Warning: Some of the images in this slide-show are very graphic. It shows is real time how the people are suffering after the quake…and why we should care. (My local charity of choice, Water Missions International based in Charleston SC, is sending 10 water-making units down there as we speak. They have no potable H2O right now…)

U.K. Woman Reports Rape, Charged for Sex Outside Marriage

A British woman who alleged that she was raped in Dubai on New Year’s Eve has had her passport confiscated and may face a jail sentence after she was charged with having sex outside marriage with her fiance.

The 23-year-old woman, a Muslim from London, of Pakistani origin, said that she was attacked by a man who is understood to be a worker in the hotel where she had been drinking with her fiance to celebrate their engagement during a three-day holiday in Dubai.

A spokesperson for the Address declined to comment yesterday. Dubai police also declined to comment.

The woman’s fiance was unaware of the incident and took her home, but when she recalled the attack the next morning they went to the police.

She told The Sun: “I always dreamed of a big family wedding in Britain, but now I just want to get married so I can get out of here.”Read more at www.foxnews.com

@HardlyNormal: Homeless Activist on Twitter

Laurel LaFlamme says:

Define “normal.” I can’t.

This clip is from “Beth’s Blog.” I just adore Beth Kanter. She believes that you CAN use social media for change, that social media is not going away, in fact, it is only going to get stronger and prosper when used for the right reasons.

Perhaps @hardlynormal is someone you might like to meet and follow?

Meeting @hardlynormal: Homeless Activist on Twitter

Photo with Mark Horvath, @hardlynormal

We did three things while we were in Santa Monica - visited the Getty, road the Ferris Wheel on the Pier, and had coffee with Mark Horvath, an advocate for homeless who uses social media to tell their stories and much more.  I first heard about Mark when he spoke at Gnomedex this year and our paths crossed virtually on the Twitter activist list, and was finally delighted to meet him in person.

Mark will lead a SXSW session “A Conversation About Social Change Through Social Media”, sharing how he was able to utilize such social networking tools as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube in bringing attention and action to the issue of homelessness in America.

Mark was recently named “Person of the Year” over at the Being the Difference blog and captures his inspiring accomplishments.

Justice, Equity, and Respect?

Laurel LaFlamme says:

I'm not certain if this is a religious group or not. I don't think it is. My take is that it's a group of people who understand that ALL people deserve compassion; and that organized religion has been (and still is) at the heart of many great atrocities for mankind.

If compassion is at the heart of all spiritual traditions, then why don't more people stand up... read more

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others - even our enemies - is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.
The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

Talking Trash: Clean Up Our Oceans

Laurel LaFlamme says:

When I was a little girl, I so admired Jacques Cousteau. He embodied everything I love about exploring the earth, investigating the oceans, and saving sea creatures great and small.

Now, his great legacy is continued through the work of his son, Jean-Michel, who has partnered with Project Kaisei to clean up our oceans and raise awareness about the severe increase in plastic pollution.

What’s really in our oceans? TRASH. Well, we already knew that. What you might not know it that even in this enlightened day and age of awareness…the global oceanic garbage disposal problem is growing leaps and bounds before our eyes.

The pictures say it all.

“We traveled thousands of miles on both vessels and we tested surface samples across that whole distance.  Every single sample we came up with plastic, every single one.

Project Kaisei - Capturing the Plastic Vortex

Project Kaisei consists of a team of innovators, scientists, environmentalists, ocean lovers, sailors, and sports enthusiasts who have come together with a common goal:

  • Study and document the marine debris found in this area of the Pacific Ocean;

  • Test catch methods for removing the debris;

  • Conduct research on the chemical interactions of marine debris in the gyre and select fishes and wildlife related to persistent organic pollutants (POPs);

  • Understand the needs required to undertake an eventual large scale clean-up of the waste material; and

  • Test technologies for conversion into an economically viable by-product: diesel fuel.

Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau speaking at a press conference Tuesday,

Cousteau was joined by Project Kaisei founders, scientists, environmentalists and ocean lovers who spent a month in the middle of the ocean at a place called the North Pacific Gyre where tons of plastic trash has collected, and is floating in the sea.

One day back from the sea
“We traveled thousands of miles on both vessels and we tested surface samples across that whole distance.  Every single sample we came up with plastic, every single one.”
Lawn chairs, fishing net, containers and a helmet floating in the ocean
An example of what they found was spread out in front of the audience; ghost fishing nets, chunks of plastic lawn furniture, crates, large containers, a helmet.
Jar with tiny plastic pieces
This is the stuff they found in every sample of water taken.
we found a myriad of types of garbage.  In some of the areas that weren’t so congested, maybe we’d see 25 pieces but in other areas we would see three to four hundred pieces of marine debris

The House That George Built: The Eastman Kodak Empire

Laurel LaFlamme says:

The image below is postcard perfect. It has to be, it’s for sale. The pictures were taken by my friend, Joanna Biondolilo, of Charleston SC. She is a wonderful, creative, passionate professional photographer (perfectionist.)

Joanna & I were able to spend some time together in July for the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk - Charleston. It was a time to catch up, chat, gossip and take pictures of the city we both love.

Today, I popped over to Joanna’s website to check out her new images. It would mean a lot to me if you did the same, perhpas even leave a comment.

Joanna is a brilliant writer and I think her blog is grossly under-appreciated. I clipped part of her story about George Eastman. It’s a thought provoking work.

Please read “The House That George Built” - Conclusion: “That is what has happened to The House That George Built! Mr. Eastman, visionary, artist, philanthropist, would roll over in his grave if he had one”.

A high school drop out at the age of 14, George Eastman built an empire. What he took a lifetime to build; others have taken a much shorter time to destroy.

Forced to find a way to support his family after the death of his father, George Eastman began his career as a messenger boy, an office boy and later a junior clerk at the Rochester Savings Bank. He studied accounting. But it was photography that captured Eastman’s interest and he began experimenting with emulsions and formulas for making dry plates. He also sought a way to make many plates in a short amount of time. Eastman wanted to come up with a simpler process for photographic documentation. These experiments were the beginning of the creation of what was once the great Eastman Kodak Company.

The Eastman House holds one of the world’s largest collections of photographic equipment.
